After going to the local pub to watch the fight between Rousey and Holm it was a bit of a shock to see Rousey hit the ground as easy as she did. Holly Holm made her look second rate and to be perfectly honest the champ Ronda Rousey really acted second rate in the build up to the fight.
The trash she spoke at the weigh in and then to not tap gloves at the start of the fight was just a show of poor sportsmanship and just reflected badly on her on the whole.
I think everyone I was with was hoping she was taught a lesson by Holm but the odds were heavily stacked against her.
That didn’t stop her putting on what was one of the best tactical displays of UFC I have ever seen. Holm played to her strengths and highlighted Rousey’s weaknesses to perfection. Holm never looked like she was in server trouble at any stage.
It got me thinking about the consequences of losing that fight for Ronda Rousey. Can she still be the pin up girl for the UFC are getting belted so convincingly? And all her sponsorship and marketing deals are they now in jeopardy? What about all the sports magazines that featured Rousey as the ultimate athlete who has now been beaten.
It must have huge repercussions from a marketing point of view and hugely brand damaging.
Like every Australian 9/10 times I love to see the underdog win and this was no exception. Holly Holm deserved that win and she won with grace and held herself as a champion should throughout the whole week.
It should serve as a reminder to everyone that no matter how big the odds are against you if you have belief you are always in with a chance to achieve your goals.
There is a saying that I have seen Bob Parson mention as his 16 Rules to Success is in my room but he says “If you are about to quit, you are closer than you think”
Meaning most of us quit when times get tough, but if you stick it out then you will reap the rewards.
I look back on some of the projects that I gave up on and wonder what they could have been if I had stuck at them. I had other reasons for stopping, most of them passion related. I was chasing the money rather than chasing the things I was truly passionate about.
Find your passions, work harder on them than any one else, stay humble and reap the rewards.
