Making Decisions Around Milestones

How often do we put off future plans for upcoming milestones? I am talking about families birthdays, weddings, Christmas, graduations the list goes on and on.

I really want to go on another travel adventure to the UK in the near future. But there are other things to consider. I have my little brothers 21st coming up in May next year and there is absolutely no way I would ever miss that. My family means the world to me. But at the same time there needs to be a line where you rule off those milestones.

The hard thing is knowing when to draw that line. I have a lot of friends with weddings on the horizon and as much as I don’t want to miss any of them there is only 1 or 2 that I would devastated if I missed it. That sounds harsh but it is the truth. The question is though would I be willing to postpone any of my own adventures to make sure that I was there. Knowing the date well in advance would help me to better answer that question. I feel the more time I have to prepare for an event the more favourable the outcome.

I have got to a point in life where I am all too aware of how fast it is passing me by. I want to tread a new path but doing that brings its own challenges and hurdles. Many people expect you to tread a path that has been tread thousands of times before. But for what? Look at their lives. Have they achieved everything they wanted to achieve? Are they basing this life advice on anything other than wanting to provide a stable future for you? If so they are not someone you should be taking advice off or your life will end up in the exact same predicament. Aim for extraordinary, shoot for the stars. You are here for a purpose, fulfil it.

This blog came about because I was looking towards next year and trying to figure out whether it was possible or not to schedule a traveling trip. When I looked at the things that were important to me it was easier to provide myself with a possible timeline that would suit. I want to be around for my brothers 21st in May but I also want to be home for Christmas because I believe Christmas is all about family and I wouldn’t want to spend it any other way.

Some other unforseen events came into the equation as well. Some of my friends from overseas are traveling to Australia next year and I want to be home for when they visit. There would be nothing worse than being out of the country when someone you care about a lot is 50 minutes from your house when typically they are situated on the other side of the world.

It’s amazing to think how many possibilities are considered without us even realising at the time. I think subconsciously we automatically consider the things that mean the most to us almost instantly.

Ultimately it comes down to whether those milestones have a strong enough persuasion to changing your decision making process.

I know for me things like my brothers 21st only ever happen once and I would be very disappointed if I missed it. But Jason Holmes who now plays for St Kilda football club I recently found out missed his brothers wedding where he was the best man to come out to Australia and try out in the draft combine with no promises of being recruited. That is a decision I couldn’t make myself. It is paying dividends for Holmes now, being the first America to debut for an AFL club but I personally would regret missing my brothers wedding doesn’t matter what the circumstance was.
