Goals With A Deadline

October 7, 2015 By Jimmy Dalgleish Leave a Comment

deadline

Today just flowed, the energy was great, I was feeling good and things got done.

The change I have implemented recently of changing how I restructure my to-do-list to concentrate on daily tasks, weekly goals and monthly outcomes has really given me a different perspective. I have taken advantage of a lot of opportunities and will be revisiting ones I shut the door on again over the coming weeks.

Wednesday is my accountability day and on the Skype call we have at the end we discuss goals we want to focus on for the week and to my surprise this was the first time ever I have said I want to keep working on what I am working on.

I was living the in the goals I set myself last week and loving it.

I was working on the Enter Comps website but for the first time in a long time I had a deadline to get it done.

How did the deadline come about?

Recently as you may have previously read I took part in a free 21 day success challenge and I met some amazing people. But on a follow up phone call from someone working on behalf of the company running the challenge we struck a common chord and I was lucky that I booked the last phone call for the day because a 15 minute phone call turned into a 1h15min phone call and I got invited to appear on my first ever podcast.

All the week I have been listening to the podcast getting a feel for the audience, what kind of content they enjoy and how I could offer some value to the audience.

Taking in all the information I learned so many little golden nuggets I could implement myself and the restructuring of my to-do-list was one of them. The podcast is about standing out and getting noticed and I will be talking about how I have been able to win so many online competitions and a lot of it comes down to that very thing. Standing out and being noticed. I am really excited about the opportunity.

But with this opportunity just around the corner I got that ‘ohh shit’ moment. For the first time ever I have got a deadline to get my website up. Now if I have learned anything it doesn’t have to be perfect. But the design element is more important on this website than what it is on my blog. There are other things I need to consider. But I want to have the website up before the podcast goes live and I can’t keep the host of that podcast waiting forever.

I work better under pressure. At university I remember writing a 5,000 word thesis in 3 days and getting 98% on the paper. But far out I would never recommend that to anyone, after it I was delusional and heavily sleep deprived it was a very stressful 3 days. It was my own fault though. The thought of writing 5,000 words comparing other people’s studies didn’t interest me at all. I had all semester to do it and I started it with 3 days to spare. It was definitely one of those moments I needed to work smarter and not harder although in this case I implemented both to get it finished as quickly as possible.

I am looking forward to a productive week this week. I am also excited about the opportunity to make my first guest appearance on a podcast this week and smashing through my to-do-list goals.

If you are struggling to get something done, find a way to enforce a deadline. Don’t make a self-imposed deadline you need to make it so your held accountable or there is a consequence if you don’t get it done. For me the consequence is lack of exposure and the chance to get off to a good start. You could make the deadline enforceable by announcing to a large audience or friendship group that they can expect whatever your goal is to be finished by whatever time frame you give it, eg. Hey everyone, my new website is launching November 1 so keep an eye out!

I would love to hear what big goals you have set yourself.
