Limitless, I have seen the movie and now the TV series has started. I binge watched the first 3 episodes and it is a fascinating concept.
A drug known as NZT has the capabilities to enable us to use 100% of our brain cells at any one time.
Common beliefs are that we only ever use 10% of our brains but a study by neurologist Dr. Richard Cytowic highlight in the Huffington Post article found that at any one time up to 16% of our brains cells are active and the 90% of the brain that was supposedly thought to be never used and called silent areas but they underscore executive and integrative alibility meaning they have a huge part in how we function as humans. These areas of the brain could be damaged and not effect motor-neuron control so they were thought to do nothing.
Having briefly read up on what people try to compare to NZT the drug that is raised is Modafinil or Provigil which is prescribed to people with narcolepsy. Essentially it is a cognitive enhancer to increase focus, memory and motivation.
As a side note if you haven’t already gathered NZT is not a real drug, modafinil on the other hand is a real drug hence the comparison to the drug NZT in the show and movie Limitless.
Its off-label use is often terms ‘The Smart Drug’ and students take it in the lead up to exams and to help them study and known as the ideal drug for exam preparation. I looked into the side effects of the drugs and while some were listed namely being insomnia, headache, stomach ache or nausea the same side effects were also listed in the placebo group in the University of Oxford and Harvard Medical School study.
I find just watching the TV show I can get more done in a short space of time. It helps you realise that anyone can piece the puzzle pieces together if they are looking in the right places.
The little things seem to not matter that much anymore and you start to look at the bigger picture. It’s a weird realisation but when I sat down to write this blog after watching the TV show the words just flowed.
I know I have bigger things to tackle this week and writing a blog should be the least of my concerns.
I have a friend who I know is about to experiment with Modafinil and I often joke with them suggesting the next time I see them they will be floating in cash and wearing heavy gold chains. But I am curious to know whether they notice the effects or not. It would be incredibly difficult to measure the possible placebo effect as well. If you keep telling yourself enough times that there is a reason to be focus and not be distracted it is going to become a reality – at least that is my opinion anyway.
If you tell yourself anything enough times it will start to become part of your reality.
For now the new limitless TV show has got my attention, one show every now and then to wind down is ok in my books. It gives my brain a period of time where it can just shut off from everything else.
If any of you own shares in a modafinil company I have no doubt you can expect an increase in sales over the next few months. Unfortunately I won’t be a customer but good luck to anyone else.
