What is success to me?
I have had a busy week. I have a new accountability buddy and I have recently enrolled in Calvin Coyles 21 day success challenge.
Today I watched the first video on his series and he elaborates on many people can’t obtain success because they don’t know what it looks like. Which got me thinking what does success mean to me?
I put together a paragraph with what success means to me in a board sense.
Success is being accountable for my own wealth, being able to spend time with my friends and family whenever I want and to have the financial freedom to have the material goods and experiences I want to have in life.
Success is not working yourself into the ground only to make someone else rich or being limited to spending quality time with family and friends outside the hours of 9-5 and watching all the experiences I want to have in life on a screen in shows like the amazing race and wondering when my time will come.
The group I am in at the moment, it is surrounded by positive energy and with people that genuinely want to make a change. My interest in this challenge is to see if any of them do make a change, or better yet how much of a change I make in myself.
My accountability buddy has set me the challenge to get all my ideas down on paper. I have a really bad habit of buying domains names whenever I have a new idea and I nurse them until something is ready to be built on it. The funny thing is justjimmy.me was the one I nursed the least. I bought it and the blog was up very quickly after that purchase. I just jumped into the deep end and I feel I need to improve on that and do it more. Too often I am waiting for everything to be perfect before I launch it.
It’s hard to know exactly what success is to me, and when I get there will I be happy? Who knows but I do know I enjoy the journey. I love making the hard decisions when they need to be made and I know my gut feeling, more often than not the right one.
Watching the video I just watched they look at success in a more holistic approach where it is broken down into 8 sub-categories and placed into a circle.
Physical and Health
Vocational Work and Volunteer Involvement
Spiritual and Personal Growth
Relational, Romance and Significant Other
Social and Friends
Recreational, Hobbies and Vacations
Financial and Cash Flow
Family and Your Inner Circle
I scored these all out of 10 and it starts to become blatantly obvious where the improvements need to be made in my life for a more balanced and fulfilling lifestyle. But also if I could achieve a 7-8 in all of these aspects it would be a very well rounded life.
Trying to balance these inconsistencies it just feels like at times I run out of hours in the day to be able to address every aspect in the way I would want to.
I instantly thought of what is in my life currently that is consuming my time that I don’t want it to be. First off was TV… why do I even bother watching TV, it doesn’t contribute to anything in this success circle at all, I don’t particular enjoy it that much and I find when I am away for weeks at a time I haven’t missed it at all.
So I think I found something there, it’s time for me to give up watching useless TV shows and sitting on the couch with no intentions of working towards anything.
Another aspect was work. I mean that takes up a ridiculous amount of time. 9am-5pm it doesn’t feel right does it. I love the people I work with and I love the digital marketing work I do. What I don’t like is the amount of time I spend in an office, especially when you look out the window and the sky is crystal blue. It almost taunts you!
I know the balance is wrong, but at the same time if you alter the work balance it affects other parts of the circle. You reduce your work hours, it affects your cash flow and your cash flow affects other aspects of the circle. It is an on-going cycle.
That is where I am at currently. I am looking forward to doing the exercise my accountability partner set me in writing down all my ideas, where they came from and if the sky was the limit for this idea what would it look like as a finished product.
All this has just come at the perfect time. I needed some direction, some motivation and some inspiration to get my goals back on track.
My message to everyone reading this is stop wasting your time with things in life that add no value to your life what so ever. If you have been pondering a big decision for some time now make a call one way or the other.
I will keep you all in the loop with how my 21 day challenge goes.
