Grand Final Day

October 3, 2015 By Jimmy Dalgleish Leave a Comment

The Australian Football League (AFL) Grand Final is the highlight of the footballing calendar in Australia. Around 100,000 people are crammed into the MCG every year for the event.

I personally have been to the 2005, 2006, 2012 and now 2015 AFL Grand Finals. I recently just got my full membership for the MCG so I can attend the Grand Finals for free but this was the first AFL Grand Final I have attended that the team I support wasn’t playing.

My only hope was that the game was a close one to which I was thoroughly disappointed. As good for it is for the supporters of the winning team the game as a spectacle suffers massively when the game is a blow out.

The 3 Grand Finals I attended were all decided by under 10 points and the atmosphere was electric. Todays Grand Final didn’t have the same feel to it. The game was all but over at the end of the 3rd quarter, some may have argued the game was over at half time.

The Entertainment

The entertainment was embarrassing like always. Most of it wasn’t the artists fault. The sound in the stadium was echoing and it was quite hard to hear the songs properly a lot of the time. Then Ellie Gouldings backing track started off queue. She copped a lot of slack on social media for supposedly lip syncing but I thought her performance was great other than the fact her microphone was definitely not loud enough. Bryan Adams was fantastic! He was definitely the highlight of the entertainment before the game.

Where To Sit

When I got to the game I had the choice of sitting right behind the player interchange bench or 3 rows from the back of the 4th level. I had to quickly weigh up the pro’s and con’s and make a decision of where to sit. In the end the atmosphere of the bottom level won out despite having a restricted view I was still able to enjoy the game. I would have regretted sitting up on the 4th level without a doubt.

To sum it up it was a fantastic performance by Hawthorn today. Cyril Rioli was at his electrifying best it was unbelievable to watch him single handedly destroy the West Coast Eagles

For the health of Grand Finals I hope next years is a closer contest, that is two blow out Grand Finals in a row.
